Botanical Garden (Orto Botanico), Padua

The world's first botanical garden was created in Padua in 1545. It still preserves its original layout – a circular central plot, symbolizing the world, surrounded by a ring of water. Other elements were added later, some architectural (ornamental entrances and balustrades) and some practical (pumping installations and greenhouses). It continues to serve its original purpose as a centre for scientific research.

The giant leaves of this lily form strong graphic shapes, but are hard to reach out on the pond. The FZ30's tele zoom lens is perfect for cropping hard and framing a tight composition which has lots of detail to add interest. The strong sunlight reveals the colours and translucence of this remarkable plant.

Using the L-1 with the wide angle zoom, I was able to shoot from up high hrough the library window and peep into the inner gardens. The gardens, contained inside old circular walls give an added sense of a secret enclosure.
