Historic Quarter of the Seaport City of Valparaíso

The bustle and salt air of Valparaiso was welcome after the desert of Atacama. Valparaiso is a town undergoing considerable changes, and the refurbishment caused a few problems as I tried to show the site in the best light and to avoid the many power and phone cables everywhere.

The site exudes colour, and the combination of the bougainvillea flower with the blue building illustrates this well. A wide aperture gives a good feeling to the image and draws the attention to the colourful foreground flowers.

The site is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for the diversity and styles of the many buildings on the Cerro (hillsides) around the old city. Here, great evening light across the buildings accentuates the texture of the corrugated iron with a warm glow. The LUMIX telephoto lens enabled me to select the parts of the hillside that I wanted.
