The Neva River and the Saint Petersburg skyline taken from the ship, Seabourn Quest.
Today we are uploading the first World Heritage site photographs that I have taken with the assistance of our new travel company partner, Seabourn Cruises.
This exclusive cruise company relationship is a great opportunity for Our Place to travel to and document sites that we otherwise would have had difficulty visiting.
Being onboard a ship with a group of enthusiastic travellers, also provides a chance to introduce and promote the concept of the World Heritage list. On my recent voyage I had the opportunity to give some illustrated talks on World Heritage (and some hints on photographing it) and it was encouraging just how receptive the audiences were to understanding more about the WH initiative and the benefits that they as tourists, can get from understanding a little about a place before they step ashore to visit it.
The recent news about the destruction of some of the most significant structures at the Syrian World Heritage site of Palmyra again reinforces the importance of us world’s citizens recognising and endeavouring to protect our collective historical monuments and artefacts.
While we can’t actually physically stop culturally myopic fanatics destroying these priceless locations, we can continue to promote the value of cultural preservation and join with others in helping share the global responsibility of protecting the numerous sites that are part of our global heritage.
Travelling with different groups of people keen to experience some of the world’s most significant locations helps renew one’s faith in human nature. Most people are enthusiastic to learn more about these places and many want to record their memories on their cameras for future recall. The current destroyers of culture are out of step with human evolution and while they are doing serious damage at present, they will eventually sink into historical irrelevance.
We at Our place are looking forward to joining with Seabourn and other committed companies and individuals to promote and protect the World’s Heritage. The right time is now…
