Partnerships For Preservation: Doha, Qatar

Recently I attended the 38th World Heritage Committee meeting in Doha, Qatar. This is the annual UNESCO meeting where the state of conservation of existing WH sites are assessed and new sites are put before the current Committee of representatives of the countries that have ratified the UN World Heritage Convention (currently 190 counties), for debate on their suitability for inscription on the World Heritage list. The Doha meeting could be seen as a rather generous one, as 26 new sites were inscribed thereby pushing the list of WH sites over the one thousand mark to a total 1007. 161 countries now have inscribed sites and it was obvious from the celebrations on the floor at the meeting that having a site inscribed is a mark of great national pride for its host country.

As part of the Doha Committee meeting, there was a side event organised by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre for official UNESCO partners. This event was to recognise the partners valued input and raise awareness of the contribution that the private sector makes to the WH initiative.

As part of this event, OUR PLACE produced a display of 8 photo banners which showcased a selection of WH sites from our archive and featured a number of quotes about the value of partnerships. Joining a select group of companies such as Google; National Geographic; The History Channel; Jaeger-LeCoultre; Seabourn Cruises etc, is a privilege and illustrates the prestige and potential reach that the UNESCO World Heritage brand can carry.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) also launched its new World Heritage “Conservation Outlook” web-site in Doha and OUR PLACE has partnered with them on this exciting initiative by supplying much of the visual material for the web-site.

Partnerships and JVs can add a lot to the individual efforts we all make towards furthering the World Heritage ideal. OUR PLACE, as a content generator and provider has specialist skill and resources and we look forward to continuing to share them with like minded organisations and companies. Together we can help spread the important message of protecting and preserving Our Place on Our Planet.
