Historic Walled Town of Cuenca

Built by the Moors in a defensive position at the heart of the Caliphate of Cordoba, Cuenca is an unusually well-preserved medieval fortified city. Conquered by the Castilians in the 12th century, it became a royal town and bishopric endowed with important buildings, such as Spain's first Gothic cathedral, and the famous casas colgadas (hanging houses), suspended from sheer cliffs overlooking the Huécar river. Taking full advantage of its location, the city towers above the magnificent countryside.

The hanging houses of Cuenca, or Casa Costalados, are perched on steep cliffs overhanging deep ravines. The zoom lens on the Lumix L1 allowed me to compose the scene from a difficult position on a nearby bridge. This building now contains the Museo de Arte Abstracto, and is one of the best examples of a Casa Costalados, and looked very beautiful in the evening light.

The great wide range zoom lens on the FZ30 was perfect for composing this scene of the hanging casa. The high bridge of Puerte de San Pablo in the foreground, gives access across the steep river ravine, and in the picture add a sense of perspective while framing the scene.

The best views of the town of Cuenca are on the outside of the steep cliffs, so I chose the FZ30 with its superb built-in wide ranging zoom lens to lean out from the roadside to get a difficult angle which showed the Cathedral and houses from outside of the cliffs.

Within the town of Cuenca are secluded squares and quiet alleyways.. The quiet operation of the FZ30 and the long reach of its built-in zoom lens, was perfect to capture this introspective moment without disturbing the individual's privacy, and convey another aspect of the character of this medieval town.

Evening in the Plaza Major is a time for the town's residents to gather and enjoy some social interaction. Children play amongst the adults, and I chose a slower shutter speed to allow the movement to add life and a sense of youthful vigour to the children's play.
